I Was There First

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” says Chloë Isis about this song. Zoe River’s relationship with her mother may be humorous and tragic. It may also not be unique.

I had my father’s camera
On the outer isles of Scotland,
Made a self-portrait
On the beach.

My mother saw my picture.
She said she was there.
My father took her portrait

You never give up hoping
Your mother is the rock in your life.
But everywhere I went, she said,
I was there, I was there,
I was there, I was there first.

On my 18th birthday,
She asked, what shall we do?
I said, can we go to
The art museum.

She said, we are going
Antique shopping,
She said, it’s not about you
It’s about me.

You never give up hoping….

I put the whole Atlantic ocean between us,
Was silent for a year.
I put the whole Atlantic ocean between us,
And still, and still…

You never give up hoping
Your mother is the rock in your life.
But everywhere I went, she said,
I was there, I was there,
I was there, I was there first.
